Now where were we??

Oh that's rights - Christmas and my Birthday passed all too quickly. Then New Year happened and we went to "Lawn with a view" and watched the fireworks from the Royal Botanic Gardens.



Then Australia Day passed with a visit to the Australian Museum which I haven't been to since I was five. They moved the poor mummy to a crappy location in a foyer to the Gem and Minerals collection (I was quite disappointed to see that they did this). And for our Australia Day dinner, I made Pavlova with my new KitchenAid mixer - but it sank - and I nearly cried.



This new year, I've decided to be more "productive". Knit more, craft more, read more, cook more (ok - this one might be stretching it a bit), and run more. In doing so, hopefully I will be more organised (I'm not sure how I made the connection here, but there you go). So my new year's challenges - I have totally stopped using "resolutions":

On being more organised
To begin with, when the BFG's parents were here, we had to clean out the spare room so that the BFG and I can move into it. We've managed to maintain a level of tidiness in there and it has been great as a second place to hang out. I'm in the spare room as I'm typing this, thinking how wonderful it is to have a proper study. I do a bit of work every Sunday night (yes work work - so it is available first thing Monday morning) and it's so nice to be able to do this at a proper desk as I look out the window instead of hunched over my laptop in front of the TV like I normally do.

So the plan is to keep the spare room tidy so I can work properly in it and hopefully have it organised so that I can finally find everything (my paperwork, craft things, etc).

On reading more
I have powered through several books since Christmas. As one of things which I'm doing to be more productive, I have taken to reading for half an hour before I go to bed. So instead of falling asleep in front of the TV, I make an effort to get my sorry ass off the couch, get myself ready to go to bed and actually read for half an hour.

This has resulted in me finishing:

  • "The Slap" by Christos Tsiolkas (we did this for my bookclub and this book generated a lot of discussion - highly recommend it);

  • "My Life in France" by Julia Childs (got this after I saw the movie);

  • "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson (I must be the last person to have read this but I got it because the BFG's parent's bought me the third book and I've been wanting to read it for a while).

While I wait for my next instalment of the Stieg Larsson trilogy to arrive (and also my next bookclub book (which is Cormack McCarthy's "The Road")) I am reading Kathy Reichs "Deja Dead" which I picked up at the op shop for $1 and also "Green Greener Greenest" by Lori Bongiorno which my sister gave me.

On Knitting and Crafting
I have also managed to further develop a new craft! Remember the tatted choker from my last post which my friend Katie made for me? Well I was totally inspired to pick up tatting again which she had shown me how to do a while ago. This time, I've actually completed something (excuse the photo - I just took it and it's late already).



I made this tatted bookmark which still needs to be blocked but I love it already. I've got grand plans to make tatted jewelry and other bits and pieces.

On Cooking
When I say cooking, I generally mean baking (because that's the fun stuff). Apart from that disastrous Pavlova, I've made a great chiffon cake (and a bad one), a fruit cake using a recipe that Katie sent me (who got it off someone else) and some cookies. I've also started do to meal planning. Seeing as we can't eat cake every night and I really hate going to the supermarket, I've decided to spend a few minutes each Sunday night thinking about lunches and dinners for the week. Luckily the BFG is quite agreeable to my suggestions and hopefully this can lead to painless supermarket shopping trips.

On Running
Last year I participated in two running events - the Bridge Run and the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge. This year, I don't think my work is sponsoring the Sydney Running Festival which the Bridge Run is a part of and instead, they are going to sponsor the City to Surf. So while I'm sure we'll still do the Bridge Run, this year our goal is to try to run (hopefully, if not at least run most of it) the whole 14 km of the City to Surf.

I think this list isn't too difficult to maintain.
